Sossusvlei a guide to visiting the great sand dunes of Namibia
Dune 45 is a star dune in the Sossusvlei area of the Namib Desert in Namibia. Its name comes from the fact that it is at the 45th kilometre of the road that connects the Sesriem gate and Sossusvlei.

How to Get to Dune 45 and Sossusvlei Heading up Dune 45 in Sossusvlei, Namibia For me, I was part of an overland trip from Cape Town to Victoria Falls, so Namibia was just a part of the itinerary. We stayed overnight in Sesriem Camp, which is one of the closest locations to stay to access the dunes and Sossusvlei.

The wind has picked up, just as I begin to climb Dune 45, here at Sossusvlei. The uphill hike was already going to be relatively tough but this is making it even harder. It's all this damn sand! Each step you make up a sand dune has its own small struggle, as your foot sinks down into the sand and you have to pull it back out to tread forward.

On the drive to Sossusvlei visitors will pass the fascinatingly shaped Dune 45. It owes its name to the fact that it is 45 kilometers from the park entrance gate at Sesriem.
